Ever have a moment where you really aren’t sure what you want to wear, what your partner should wear, whether the hat will work with your outfit….? Trust me, I know that feeling well. Especially when you are planning what to wear for engagement photos, you want to make sure that you choose something that will stand the test of time and ensure you think you both look amazing for years to come. It can be a daunting task!

The good news is, I’m hear to help! As a Wedding Photographer in Alberta, I have plenty of experience helping my couples decide what to wear for engagement photos. While my own wardrobe and fashion items might be somewhat of a mess, I can promise I’m much better at telling you what to consider wearing than I am figuring out my own.

Here are some things to consider when deciding your wardrobe for your session!

Colors

Choosing the right colors for yourself and your session is one of the most important things you can focus on for a couple of reasons:

  1. You don’t want to stick out from the rest of your surroundings in a bad way, but you want to harmonize with them and still pop from the background

  2. Certain colors will go out of style quicker than others

  3. Some colors just don’t suit certain skin tones

If you are really worried, you can always hire a personal stylist to help you figure out exactly what suits your skin tone and body shape! But if you want to do it yourself, here’s a few tricks when figuring out what to wear for engagement photos.

What to Wear for Engagement Photos

In general, unless you are going for a certain vibe, bright colors are something you would not want to wear to an engagement photo session. This includes bright greens, oranges, pinks and yellow. If you have one bright color that you would like to use, choose one color and pair it with neutral colors such as browns, beiges, greys and blacks. Consider the background that you will be photographed against: bright summer greens pair better with neutrals so that you stand out, where brighter colors against white snow will help you pop.

What Else to Include in Planning for Your Engagement Photos

Think about accessories! When planning what to wear for engagement photos you want to accessorize a little! Hair pieces, jewelry, hats, there’s nothing wrong with adding a little bling!

What to Remember for Your Engagement Photos

Your engagement photographer should help you remember these little details, but just in case, here are a few things to remember when getting ready for engagement photos:

  • Remove any fit-bits, Apple Watches etc unless you specifically want to include them

  • Remove any hair ties from your wrist

  • If you wear transition lenses and don’ t mind switching in to contacts, you will likely appreciate being able to see your eyes in your photos, especially if it is bright out when you are doing your engagement photos

  • Do not get a spray tan just before your session! While you may love the look of your spray tans, if it goes at all awry, you will look orange in camera, which is doubtfully what you would like to look like.
