Everything You Need to Know to Plan an Engagement Session

How to plan an engagement session

Unless you are a natural model, engagement sessions (or any photographic sessions for that matter) can be a little nerve wracking. But don’t fret, they are very relaxing and are actually fun assuming you hire a photographer who fits your personality and style!

Choosing your Photographer:

With so many photographers to choose from, it may feel like a daunting task to choose one. Here are some tips for finding the perfect photographer for your engagement session:

1.     First and foremost, do you like their style? Every photographer is different, with editing, posing, and just in general the feel to their photos. Does it vibe with you, and what you are looking for? Never choose a photographer whose style you would like to change, as they likely won’t change it for you, and it will just leave you wishing that you had picked a different photographer.

2.     Many photographers offer free consultation calls, where you can get on the phone (or Zoom) and have a chat about what you are looking for. This will primarily be where you can decide if you think you will get along well for a session. If something feels off, maybe it’s just not right for you.

3.     Remember, money isn’t everything, but it is generally a good determining factor between the pros and the hobbyists. If a photographer is charging a decent amount compared to another, they likely have better service, professionalism, and overall you will likely be happier with your photos than choosing someone who may be just starting out. But if your budget doesn’t fit, then they understand too.

By using these three tips for finding the perfect engagement photographer, you will have the most stunning engagement photos that you will not regret.

*And just a little PSA, please do not ghost any of the photographers you reach out to! Remember, there is someone on the other side of that email, or phone call, who is likely just as excited as you for your photos. We are human to! They don’t want to be left hanging in suspense, and would rather you just be truthful about why you didn’t choose them. It helps them improve their service as well.

Once you find the perfect photographer, now comes the fun stuff! Choosing a location, any activities you may want to do, outfits etc.

Choosing a Location:

engagement session tips

If you chose a photographer (like me) who is completely here to help you plan your session, then great! We can help you pick the perfect location based on your vision, and any activities you may be looking to do. If you have to find a location on your own, here is a few tips for finding the perfect Engagement Session Location:

1.     What kind of vision are you going for? Urban, natural, mountain, desert? There are so many different aesthetics you can choose. Start by narrowing it down to what you want to see in the background.

2.     Distance and accessibility: How far are you willing to travel for your session? Where will your photographer travel to? Is it easily accessible, or will you have to hike in? Is there nearby parking? Bathrooms? Cell service? You want to make sure it’s a location you are comfortable travelling to, to minimize any stressors before the shoot.

3.     Weather and sunshine: Do you have to be aware of inclimate weather that may cause hazards, or the need to reschedule your shoot? Will it be bright and sunny, or a very shaded area? It is best to consult your photographer on lighting suggestions.

Once you find the perfect location, time to pick outfits that work with it!

tips for Engagement Session Outfits:

1.     Choose clothing that first most, you are comfortable in. While you want to look good, if you are uncomfortable, it will show in the images. You will look much happier and relaxed in the session if you are happy in what you are wearing.

2.     Avoid patterns! This is a huge mistake for a couple of reasons. Patterns can be very distracting in the image, detracting from the one thing that you want to focus on, you and your love! Patterns can also reflect light in a way that is difficult for the camera to read, which can result in something called moiré. Trust me, you don’t want to have that, as its not always fixable by your photographer.

3.     Solid colors work amazing and try to choose colors that complement each other and the landscape. If you need inspiration, search Pinterest for color palettes, choose one and pick your outfits using it.

4.     Accessories: You don’t need a lot of bling to look stunning, but if you want to add some accessories, they always look great. Earrings, scarves, hats.. But also remember to NOT include accesorries that you perhaps wear everyday, like Apple Watches, or hair ties around your wrist. Get you and your partner to do a once over of each other before you start your session, to make sure you both look amazing.

After all that, its just time to have fun with your photographer and your session! Remember to relax and listen to your engagement photographer. Trust me, they know what looks best!
